Choosing how you want to renovate your walls

The role of a decorative material for a wall

When you have a renovation project in your home, the choice of floor type is often a priority (waxed concrete, tiles, parquet, etc.). The role of the walls in the decoration of your home should attract your attention as much as that of the floor. The wall is the most powerful factor in differentiating yourself, depending on the decorative style you have chosen for your interior.

Advantages of renovating your walls

Renovation of walls provides greater resistance to the walls where they are installed. In the rooms of the house, cracks and micro-cracks are avoided in places where walls can be hit (stairs, corridors, etc.) and in the living areas (bedrooms, living room, etc.).

Aesthetically, there is a wide choice of renovations that can be smooth or patterned. Wall renovations allow you to differentiate yourself throughout the rooms of your house or flat. It adds charm to a space and allows you to express your personality.

Renovating your walls on a budget

The price of wall cladding should be factored into a renovation and is determined by the quality of the material, the complexity of the installation, and the size of the cladding.

For wallcovering materials, the cheapest include wallpaper, PVC, or wall tiles. On the other hand, there are more expensive materials: natural wood, ceramic or porcelain tiles, and stone.

The different choices of wall renovation :

Paint

The star of all coverings, it is the best-known and most widely used covering in Switzerland! Available in an infinite number of colors with gloss, satin, or matt effects, you are bound to find a paint to suit your taste.

The choice of paint to apply on a wall depends on the room, a bathroom requires a paint resistant to moisture while a paint for a living room is made with a washable paint. Painting a children's room requires different requirements than for a parent's room, particularly in terms of the effect of the paint used. A glossy paint requires a perfectly prepared and smooth surface so as not to accentuate imperfections, while a matte paint will hide small defects.

Wall tiling

Tiling is the traditional covering most often found in bathrooms and kitchens. It is chosen because of its high resistance to moisture and in kitchens because of its resistance to grease stains. It has a low wear and tear and can be produced in a variety of shapes and aspects, making it an essential element to consider when renovating. However, tiles require regular maintenance and when they are glossy, any imperfections or scratches are particularly noticeable.

Wooden panelling or panels

Wood on walls is an extremely popular and trendy covering, bringing charm and warmth to a room. For this type of cover, you can choose the type of wood you like from all the wood species that exist in Switzerland (walnut, oak, fir, red cedar, larch, etc.). This type of flooring requires special maintenance, and if it is made of precious wood, its price can quickly increase.

Waxed concrete

Versatility with waxed concrete. This coating is very quick to make, its resistance is remarkable and moreover, its impermeability allows it to be the coating of several rooms in your house. With this type of coating, there is no risk of cracks on the walls for several decades. Similarly, visual effects on concrete can create superb renderings, which makes it one of the most cherished coverings by architects.

Wallpaper

These types of coverings are very quick to install, offering a lower labor cost than other types of coverage where the work is much more time-consuming. Wallpaper allows for maximum customization of living areas and has the advantage that it can be changed at the owner's discretion. There are several types of wallpaper that can be used to achieve more or less qualitative effects:

  • Wallpaper hides the imperfections of the wall

  • Vinyl wallpaper has the particularity of being very easy to wash and to be easily transported from one room to another

  • Washable wallpaper, like vinyl wallpaper, can be cleaned but cannot be transported. Once installed, it is permanent.

  • Non-washable wallpaper is not very resistant and is the least expensive solution for this type of covering.

There are also many other wall coverings: stone, brick, stucco, plaster, and glass cloth. Most of these coverings require the intervention of a professional in the field.
