Renovating your bathroom: 6 questions to ask yourself

Bathroom renovations have over the last two years become an important project for many households who are looking to modernise these rooms in their homes.

While the renovations can be tricky, with the right planning and guidance, you can very easily and quickly achieve the result that you are looking for. The Abilect team has compiled for you below 6 questions you need to ask yourself when embarking on a bathroom renovation project.

  1. Will I partially renovate or completely renovate?

When remodeling, you can choose to simply upgrade your installations – remove the existing installations and instal new ones. Here you are not touching the foundational plumbing. No modifications to the tiling / walls / floor. Just a simple switch of existing installations.

Or, you can choose to change the entire look of your bathroom. Dismantle and recycle all installations. Remove all tiling on walls and floors. Change the installations entirely – not just replace them. Change from a standard shower with a receiver base to an Italian shower. Change from a single sink to a double sink.

Naturally, the cost difference for both material and labour is significant between the two types of remodels. Based on what is comfortable for you in terms of both budget and extent of work done, you can decide on how exactly you want to upgrade the look of your bathroom.

  1. Will I retain the configuration of my bathroom as it is, or will I change it?

When considering a total renovation of a bathroom, you can also consider changing the configuration of the bathroom. Move the toilet from one side to another. Change the positioning of the sink so that you can have a larger sink. Change the positioning of your bathtub or shower to accommodate for a different size.

  1. Will I be undertaking any major appliance changes?

For either a total or partial renovation, you can consider changing your appliances entirely. You can move from a toilet fixed to the ground to a suspended toilet. You can switch from a bathtub to a shower. The possibilities are endless.

  1. Do I want to continue with tiling on the floors and walls or do I want to try something else?

Bathrooms are traditionally tiled – the best adapted material for a room that in general generates and retains humidity. However, recently there have been some new materials used in bathrooms that help you give your bathroom a more modern look. Most popular are:

    1. Waxed cement floors and walls
    2. Water resistant PVC / Wood flooring
    3. Hydro-resistant plaster boards for the walls with a moisture and humidity resistant paint
  1. Will I upgrade the heating of my bathroom?

A fun upgrade to give yourself (which will also give you a nice hotel feel) is adding a heated towel rack. It serves the dual purpose of heating your bathroom as well as keeping your towels warm from when you step out of the shower. Upgrade your standard, traditional radiator for something that will make your life a little bit cosier.

  1. Do I want to do a bigger project?

We’ve talked about partial remodels. We’ve talked about total renovations. Are you considering a larger project altogether?

Have a small bathroom? If you have the space, why not extend it?
